Hi Mary, thanks for your response.I don't really have much more than what I said before.I know he lived in Pembroke and owned enough land to make him one of the richer people in town.He probably was born at the turn of the century since his oldest children were born in the early 20's.I think his wife was Lumbee since the Sampson name is pretty common among the Lumbee and the Native people in Sampson County, Coharie. He might be related to the Dight Paul family in some way since there seems to be a history of intermarrying with Lumbee.I figured when I saw the Dight Paul family listed as mulatto that there was a Lumbee connection.I'm interested in this line since this is one of the two non-Lumbee lines I have in my family tree.I am Lumbee and I grew up in Robeson Co.I have the Hammond name you mentioned back to the 1600's in my tree.I think the fact that these old families had connections in the tidewater VA and northeast NC area explains there connection in Robeson Co. area.I know the Locklear, Chavis, Oxendine,Hammonds and some other common Lumbee surnames all come down from that area at some point in the late 1600's and early 1700's.Anyway, I can ask my grandmother for more info about A.Y. Paul.My grandfather never talks about him and doesn't recognize him as his father so I don't think I can get any info from him. Thanks for your help.
