My info. on JPJ's family is the following:
JPJ's parents, John Paul and Jean Duff both worked for the Laird of Arbigland, William Craik, at the time of their marriage. John Paul was a gardener and Jean Duff was his housekeeper, although rumour said she had been something more. John and Jean were married on 29 November 1733 in New Abbey, a village that had grown up around the ruins of Sweetheart Abbey about 6 miles north of Arbigland. They had the following children:
1. WilliamBorn about 1738, emograted to
Virginia, died 1774
2. JannetBaptised 22 April 1739, married
a local shopkeeper named Taylor
3. Mary Annb. 2 March 1741 in Milnhill.
m.twice: a sailor of Whitehaven
then a shopkeeper named Lowden
(or Louden)
4. Sondied young
5. Daughterdied in infancy
6. JPJBorn 6 July 1747, Arbigland
7. Jeanb.25 April 1749 Arbigland
