ANN H. PAUL of St. Helena, California died December 1 of breast cancer. Born in 1922, the beautiful middle daughter of Ruby Wassom Hudlin of Tulsa and Fred Hudlin, Sheriff of Tahlequah, left Oklahoma at 18 to pursue a modeling career in New York City. After establishing herself with the then prestigious Anover Agency, Mrs. Paul appeared in the fashion pages of the time and modeled for Bergdorf Goodman of Fifth Avenue. In 1943 Mrs. Paul married Bernard Paul of New York and in 1950 they moved to Houston, Texas to raise their family of three children, five quarter horses, and three golden retrievers. After a cosmopolitan life in New York, Mr. and Mrs. Paul pursued all things Texan and were active in Houston civic and social affairs. They established an Emergency Squad of ham radio operators for the Harris County (Houston) Sheriff's Department to provide a communications network during hurricane season and communications for U.S. families with members on humanitarian and scientific missions in remote parts of the world. A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Paul also worked as Fashion Coordinator for Sakowitz of Houston for several years and was President of Houston's Women of Rotary. With her good looks and love of fashion, she was dubbed "Annie the Splash." After the death of her beloved husband, Mrs. Paul moved to St. Helena, California in 1989 to live near her oldest child, Pat Perini Long. She is survived by her daughters Patricia Perini Long of St. Helena and Elizabeth Avedon of New York City. Her son Robert Paul died in 1996. She is also survived by her grandchildren Elizabeth Perini of San Diego, California, Mercedes Paul of Houston, Texas, Nathan and Spencer Paul of Minneapolis, Minnesota, William Avedon of Beijing, China, and Matthew Avedon of New York City; her sisters Martha Kreger of Greenwich, Connecticut and Kathryn Purtich of Los Altos, California. The family plans a private memorial service in the gardens of her daughter's home in St. Helena in the spring
