Small correction regarding masonic dealings:
When the Covelo Lodge was first chartered in October 1874, Patty held the position of S.W. (Senior Warden) under James M. Ellis as first Master (listed as W.M., or Worshipful Master, at chartering); Patty succeeded him as lodge Master in 1875, and withdrew (I'm assuming either from that particular lodge or from masonry itself, probably the former) in 1878.
