I looked up in "The Petty Papers" edited by me, Barb McGee, the information is Vol.7 #2 pages 35, 36 & 37. information on "Some Petty's in Early Military Service," written by James W. Petty C.A. L.S., a.g which means he is a certified Genealogist. (Petty papers Vol. 1-4 were started by Jim, I took over in Vol. 5 and did Vol 6-13. These are now available on CD from me. Write for other information.)
This is information on military service in Virginia. He talks about the early Petty family who served in the various wars from VA. On the Paty family:" I found a record of Jesse Paty serving in the Bedford County (VA) Militia in Sept. 1758. This entry is of interest to those who are associated with the Paty family. We have had record of only two families of Paty's in VA at this time, namely the family of Sylvester Paty of Essex Co., and the family of James Patey (sic) of Halifax Co., Va. The eldest son of James was Jessey Patey/Paty. He was born about 1743, as calculated from past research. This military record would indicate that he was born earlier, or that he was bout 15 when he served.
The Quaker family in Virginia, and consequently, those that were active in religion did not serve in the military. Jesse was not actiive, and later served in the American Revolution as did some of his sons.
Also in Petty Papers # 5 the first issue I wrote, gives the main early Petty /Patey/Pette families that were the early ones I found. The CD might be useful to you, if only for the history published therin, and the many maps. There are small articles written that may mean something to someone out there that have not made their way into my website: www.pettygenealogy.com. Or just go to google and put in petty genealogy. right now it is #1 on the Petty listing.
