the West brothers--not Patty, but adopted the name?

It begins to look as if there is a possiblity that the Obediah, Josiah, and Zorable WEST may have adopted the Patty surname. After being bound to Jesse Patty and living most of their lives in his household until grown, they may have been allowed to use the Patty family name. This may be why some family stories have come down to us like the one that says "our family adopted the name of Patty."
What happened to the father of these three? It is not unheard of that a father may have gone off to war during those times of Revolution and unrest and not returned alive; or, if he did, he was unable to attend to the care and upbringing of a wife and small children.
Hopefully in the next few months I can get a certified genealogist to look into this further. There are many more places to search for records on this suject. Who was Sarah, their mother? There is no record shown so far as to who she was. When I say record, I mean court, deed, land, bible; not even a letter to someone about it.
Happy hunting,
Sylvia
