Gratian Patten b. abt 1565 in Middlesex England to William Patten b. abt. 1533 and Anne Johnson b. abt 1533. is an interesting enigma. Most of the family trees that I have seen have him as a father of William Patton, a rector who was born in Fifeshire, Scotland abt 1590 and moved to Ireland, Donegal to be more exact. The name changes from Patten to Patton at this point and continues on down the line with an exception of Henry "Patten" Patton Jr. of Dundee, Scotand and later Clodevaddock, Ireland. Henry was the grandson of Rector William. All of that is documented.
The problem comes from any proof that William Patton was the son of Gratian. The only thing I can find is a document called "Memorial of Bishop Waynflete" mentioning the in 1600, a William was in his minor as a son of Gratian in England. How they got to Scotland, who knows? Gratian's wife, Elizabeth Coillis, married after Gratian's death into another family. What became of William? There is a mention in the notes to "Memorial" of a will of Gratian Patten dated 1603. If anyone has a copy or knows where this is, it may give some answers. John Trussal was who Elizabeth married. Gratian is stated as being of St. Andrews Holborn.
