Clyde Patton was born, 2 Jun 1881, only child of Charles and Susie (Johnson) Patton, natives of Ohio.They both died in Jackson County, IN.The father was a railroad engineer.
From age four, Clyde lived in Jackson County, IN, and acquired most of his education in the public schools of Seymour.He was about 17 years of age when the Spanish American war broke out.At Louisville, KY, he enlisted into the Twelfth Cavalry, a volunteer regiment inducted into the service of the US.Clyde was a butcher for L troop. After a voyage of several weeks, he reached Manila where he had charge of the army butcher shop and remained there until the Filipino insurrection was ended. He returned to the US on a freight boat, landed at San Francisco, and proceeded to San Antonio, TX, where he was discharged at Fort Clark, 5 Feb 1903. After a few months in Indiana, Clyde reached Montana, 25 Jul 1904.At Lame Deer he became the agency butcher for about four years.
While he was on duty he married.On 19 Apr 1909, he and his wife established themselves on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, first at Poplar where he was a farmer.A year later he was promoted to charge of the sub-agency at Wolf Point and continued there until 1 Sep 1915. He resigned and took up business for himself, buying the John Listerud elevator at Wolf Point, buying and shipping grain and handling flour and feed.He served as deputy sheriff under Sheriff Bennett, serving from Jan 1917 to Mar 1919.
On 19 Mar 1905, Busby, MT, Clyde married Miss Elsie Spenser, a government teacher at the Northern Cheyenne Agency. She was born 2 Jan 1876, Adair Co., IA, daughter of Orson R. and Susan (McConnell) Spenser.
