I don't quite understand all of your response, so I'm hoping you could clarify.Which Patton line do you descend from? Are you a descendent of William Patton, Rev War veteran (1754-1846)?If so, thru which son?Are your Pattons German or Scots-Irish?And could you tell more about the 3 different Patton lines of Wythe Co, VA? I can only come up with 2 different lines.
This response will distinguish between the two Patton families of Wythe Co, VA that I am aware of, and concentrate on the John and Barbara Rains Patton line.
To begin with, I can only find one Patton line in Wythe Co, VA from its creation in 1790 thru 1810 and that is a William Patton (Rev War Veteran).Only one William Patton shows in each tax list until 1810. At that time the tax list shows a William Patton Sr. and a William Patton Jr.Only one William Patton though shows in the 1810 census. However, when you look at this census closely, it looks as if William Patton Jr. and his wife Rebecca Smith (they were just married in 1809) are still living at his father's home.
A John Patton appears in the 1812 tax list, in the same district as the other two Pattons.I believe this to be another son of William Patton, Sr.A Henry Patton then shows in the 1818 tax list along with the other Pattons in the same district.I also believe this to be another son of William Patton, Sr.
In the 1820 tax list we have the first occurrence of a Patton that is probably not a son of William Patton, Sr.This is a Valentine Patton who is listed in a different district. In the 1820 Wythe Co, VA census, Valentine is not listed; however a Barbary (Barbory) Patton is listed. One researcher believes this is Barbara Rains (Raines) Patton who married a John Patton of Montgomery Co, VA. in 1792.Either John has died or he was off traveling at the time of the census. This John Patton (born ca 1767) is probably a grandson of the Henry Patton (born ca 1720) of Augusta and Montgomery Counties (originally from Ireland). Barbara Patton has 3 young boys and 3 older women at home...(Barbara is over 45, and if she is the wife of John is probably at least age 50).One boy is under age 10 and 2 boys are between 10 and 16.One researcher believes they had a total of 12 children (6 boys and 6 girls), one of which (the eldest) was probably Thomas.
In the 1824 Wythe Co, VA tax list, a Thomas appears along with Barbara and Valentine, all in the same district and all taxed on the same day.I believe that Thomas and Valentine are the sons of Barbara. If Barbara's husband John is still alive...where is he?Probably died before the 1820 census. In the next few tax lists, the only addition is a Hiram Patton, occasionally taxed on the same day as the other Pattons.I assume he is also another son.
In the 1830 Wythe Co, A tax list we have:Thomas, Valentine, Barbara, Hiram, Washington, and Western Patton; all living in the same district and taxed on the same day.Could these be 5 of the 6 sons of John and Barbara Rains Patton?Based on the 1830 census, Thomas and Valentine were born between 1790-1800.Barbara has 4 boys at home; three of which were born between 1800 and 1810.These are probably Hiram, Washington, and Western. One other boy was born between 1810 and 1815.Don't know his name yet, but was probably Russell Patton.1840 Wythe Co, VA census confirms Hiram was born between 1800 and 1810.
A Hiram Patton married Roxena Kinser, in 1834 (Meth. Epis, minister was Casper Yost).
By 1837, we have George W., Russell, and Hiram Patton. This George W. could be the same person as the Washington Patton mentioned earlier, though can't tell for sure.
Russell Patton married Malinda Miller, in 1839 (Meth Epis, minister Casper Yost).
Throughout the 1840s, Hiram Patton is the only Patton in this district that appears in the Wythe Co, VA tax lists. The rest have either died or now show in another county or state.Even Hiram disappears from the Wythe Co records after 1849.
Pulaski Co, VA was formed in 1839 from parts of Wythe and Washington Co, VA.In the Pulaski Co, VA 1840 census, (Newbern area), we find Thomas (1790-1800), Henry (1770-1780), Russell, 1810-1820), and Valentine (1790-1800).Believe Thomas, Russell, and Valentine are sons of John and Barbara Patton.Based on his age, this Henry is too old to be their brother.Don't know who he is, though he is probably a brother to the John Patton who married Barbara Rains (thus, he is the uncle of all these young men). It appears that these Pattons were living on the eastern side of Wythe Co, VA when it broke off to form the western part of Pulaski Co, VA.
Hiram (blacksmith) and Roxena Kinser Patton show in the 1850 Pulaski Co, VA census and he shows born in 1806.They live next to John Rains, silversmith.
Russell and Matilda Patton show in the 1850 Pulaski Co, VA census and he shows born around 1811.Interestingly, they have several Raines children living with them.
Thomas and Elizabeth Patton show in the 1850 Pulaski Co, VA census and he shows born around 1797.
So, it seems to me (could be wrong) that William Patton (1754-1846) was the only Patton family in Wythe Co, VA until around 1820.At this time Barbara Patton shows with some of her sons. She is probably the widow of the John Patton of Montgomery Co, VA (of Scots-Irish ancestry). They always appeared in separate districts. So, between 1790 and 1850, I only show two distinct Patton families for Wythe Co, VA.William Patton dies in 1846 (Will proven in court that lists all his children), Wythe Co, VA.Barbara Patton and children show in Wythe Co, VA in 1820, but all (can't vouch for the girls) the boys seem to eventually either die early or end up in Pulaski Co, VA by 1850.
Let me know if there are any questions/issues with what I have shown above. As always, there could be errors or faulty assumptions.
Larry
