FYI, my records show that in 1816, David and Mahaly (Sowards) McBroom hired William G.(or E?) Patton, i.e., their brother-in-law, as their attorney.Here's a transcription of the handwritten document:
"Know all men by these presents that We David McBroom and Mahaly McBroom wife of the said David, Mahaly Sowards Daughter and one of the heirs of Thomas Sowards Dec'd of the County of Floyd and State of Kentucky, Having & resposing Special trust and confidence in William G [E?] Patton of the Said County & State do here by nominate and appoint the said William G. Patton our true & lawful attorney for and in our names to ask demand Sue for recovery receive all or any part of the estate of the said Thomas Sowards Dec'd to which we or either of us is or are entitled that is the estates to which I the said Mahaly am entitled as heir at law to the Thomas Sowards Dec'd to which or the David am entitled from having intermarried with the said Mahaly heir as aforesaid of which estate Richard Dameron of the County & State aforesaid.......with whom and with every other person having or detaining any of the estate of the said Thomas Sowards, the said William G. Patton is authorized to settle and from them to recover and receive all the estate to which we or either of us is entitled as aforesaid & upon receipt there of by or payment to our said attorney a general or other release or discharge for the same to make excecute and deliver and all other receipts &....to give which of right ought to be given or are legally demanded.Hereby ratify and confirming without the power or liberty of recanting whatsoeever, our said attorney shall or may legally do execute or perform in the promise in testimony whereof we have here unto set our hands and affixed our seals this 15th day of October 1816.
