You will find here extracted Patton records from many Tennessee counties. After a few general references I give the data by county, starting alphabetically. Some of this data was obtained at the Tenn State Library and Archives and may not be too readily available. This is a 100 kb file, and was originally posted online at my Patton site. I need the room for other data so am posting it here for posterity. Of course errors and omissions should be pointed out. I don't know if these records have been published. I made copies of the pages with these records. The record starts in 1822. pg 19 1822 Robert Patton 149 acres (then assessed taxes) 1828 Thomas Patton 292a A C Patton - Robert Patton - 1830 Thomas Patton 324a Robert Patton - Thomas above is Robert's, (m Welmet) brother. He moved his family to Jackson Co Mo about 1830. A C is Thomas’ oldest son Anderson C Patton who died in Buchanan Co Mo in Dec 1852. Robert-----I think this must be the Robert you referred to (Robert Jr) Helen Patton's manuscript refers to him as one of Thomas' sons but adds no furthur information. 1831 Robert Patton 149a (deeded land) 65a school land 1832 Robert Patton 149a 65a TAX LIST CAPT PATTON'S CO 1833 Thomas C Patton - Robert Patton 149a 65a 1834 (I do not have) TAX LIST CAPT PATTON'S CO 1835 Patton 149a 65a (no first name) Patton Thomas C - Patton Joseph - 1836 Patton Joseph 149a 65a Robert Patton died in 1835. Charles Patton owned a farm a short distance from Falk's Store. Alfred Burch also stated that Charles Patton came to St. Joseph Missouri, with a carload of horses and sold them at the stockyards, in 1900, and came on to Whitesville, Andrew County Missouri to visit Alfred's parents, Asa and Adeline Burch. Alfred Burch stated that Charles Patton's father was a brother of William Patton. William Patton is Alfred Burch'sgreat grandfather. No records have been found to verify the statement that William with wife Rebecca Parker is a brother of Thomas Cunningham Patton. Thomas Cunningham Patton being the father of Charles Patton mentioned by Alfred Burch." I submit that the tax records, marriage record in Jefferson Co Tn, and land sale in Washington Co Ar to Carneys is, with the above quoted family recollection, sufficient proof of Thomas Cunningham Patton being the son of Robert Patton [and Wellmet Thornbrough]. [Thos Cunningham P md Susannah Carney] As to the other questions, the manuscript has no title, it was loose papers handed out to the attendees of the 196x reunion. I'm not sure which William you mean, if the one in Whitesville, he was a brother. Seems like there was another in the early 179x records of Jefferson Co Tn, he might be a brother of Robert and Thomas, there is an Israel Patton on the 1822 Tax list with whom Robert has a land transaction in the late 182x. His descendants have tried without success to find proof of his connection as a son or nephew of Robert. I agree with you about the other Robert, 1804. Seems to be of another line. If you want me to copy this packet for you, e-mail me seperately with your address. Glad to connect with your line. <tenn.ref JEFFERSON CO TENN DEEDS c/o Fay Hoodock Nov 1788. Exec's- John Hamilton Daniel Ormond Jacob Handyshall. ====== notes- 1. John Bailey was surely a stepson, and we could conclude Thomas married a Sarah who had previously married a Bailey and had son John by him. This indicates that Thos had possibly been married before also. 2. Thomas had four married daughters in 1818, so they were certainly born by around 1800. This means Thomas was married by then, probably mid-1790's or before, and was hence born by 1775, likely earlier. A Thomas Patton (and only one) appears on Sumner tax lists 1788-1795. This could refer to him. If so he was born by around 1767 to be age 21 in 1788. (Or was there a lower minimum age in Tenn??) 3. The Thomas of 1790's tax lists seems to be living close to a Robert Patton, possibly a brother. Need to check deeds. They could be the sons of Andrew Patton (will 1790 Orange Co NC) who left his Cumberland lands to these sons. The Cumberland River forms the southern boundary of Sumner Co so this looks pretty likely. ROBERT PATTON appears in numerous court records from 1800 to 1810. Sumner Co. There are references to David, Samuel, James, William Patton sons of Robert and Margaret. Robert Patton names a Robert Patton (and Margaret Patton) as his executor, presumably his son.] This will probably account for the extra William Patton (Robert and Margarets son) who married Jane Lowry. This Robert Patton (in Sumner Co. 1792-1829) does not seem to be in Orange Co. N. C. at all and there is nothing to place him there in any year between 1792 and 1809. This Robert is the Robert on Sinking Creek. The Thomas Patton on Sinking Creek was in the militia in 1789. He owned land before this so whether he got the land for being in the militia or bought it is unknown NOBODY in Sumner knows where Sinking Creek is, nor are there any maps of it. I think Sinking Creek sunk! The Robert Patton that left the will in 1809 with Margaret and Robert Patton as Executors left the bottom 2/3's of his land to his son Robert. Thats what the will states. This is probably the Robert on Madisons Creek whose son married Elizabeth Perry in 1823. Robert Patton son of Andrew Patton was in Orange Co in 1800. He owned land and was a planter there in 1800 Robert Patton sold the land Andrew left him and his brother Thomas in 1800 to James Thompson in Orange Co. N.C. His name was on the deed of sale and Thomas's is not. James Thompson moved to Davidson Co. and lived there for many years. Thomas may have been dead, not of legal age, or sold his land to Robert. There is no deed of conveyance to Robert recorded. An Abraham Young is living near to John Shannon. He is listed on several tax lists near John. He is the administrator of Thomas Patton's estate. He administrates monies to Thomas's wife Nancy and children. This is the Thomas Patton in Robertson Co. who died there after 1840. Could this possibly be Thomas, son of Andrew, and bro. to Robert? Reasonable Conclusion: Robert Patton, son of Andrew, is not the Robert Patton in Sumner Co. 1) Robert Patton in Sumner Co was living in Sumner Co. in 1792 and other tax years in between and living in 1799 on Sinking Creek owning a negro and paying taxes there. He is listed in numerous court records in Sumner co. from 1800 to 1809. 2) Robert Patton, son of Andrew, was living in Orange Co. in 1800 as was a Planter there. He may have still been at home with his mother or had land of his own. The Robert Patton living in Orange Co. in 1800 is the son of Andrew Patton who died 1790.. Possible conclusion: This Robert Patton in Orange Co. N.C., son of Andrew, married Elizabeth Guthrie in 1803. He had son Andrew who was born in N.C. in 1805. He moved to Robertson Co. or Sumner Co. or both. [John Shannon lived on land adjoining the Red River, Drakes Creek and Station Camp. His land was on the border of Sumner Co. which later became Robertson Co. James Guthrie lived next to John Shannon on the Red River. Robert Guthrie was also in the vicinity on the Red River. This deed of conveyance from Robert Patton and Samuel Patton to Jacob Patton is produced in open Court and the execution thereof is duly acknowledged and the same is ordered to be registered. Tax paid. Attest: Thos Hardeman, Clk of said Court This was followed by deeds from each of the brothers and sisters. This is interesting. According to the above deed, Robert Patton is the only one that signed the registration in open court. Samuel had left in 1816 and evidently he and Robert had turned over the property in 1816, but the deed was never presented in open court until 1824. I have to say that Samuel "DIDN"T" return, by a close examination of this deed, however, he did turn it over to his brother. Also, have an 1820 census in which the Samuel you mentioned showed up on. He was an old man by that time, was alone and had 5 slaves. Not Samuel son of James. I still hold that my Samuel Boyd Patton is the son of James and Margaret.
