PAT- The business of proving that a Rev War ancestor was a specific individual who served in a given company can be easy if he had a very unusual name. But there were dozens of John Pattons and William Pattons. As I note in my original post, there is positive proof that John Patton of Harrison Co did serve where he said as he applied for a pension and the service he claimed matches the official record. On the other hand, we can only suspect that William might have served (he was 12 years younger), and if so he should have served from Chester Co, not Lancaster. If you will look at my original post under Series 5 vol VII page 651 you will see that a militia list of men of "Saulsbury" Two under Capt Wm Brisbane (undated) shows pvts Thomas and William Patton. Now this indicates that two young men who served together were from the same neighborhood and were most likely brothers (no proof.) As I note in a footnote when an older Thomas Patton of Salisbury Twp died in 1812 his exec was William Patton. I believe the weight of the evidence says that this Wm never left the area, and could not be the Wm who went to WV. In other words, DAR applicants have gotten it wrong for years. Nothing to be ashamed of. I found out years after joining the SAR that there was a mistake in my line so I reapplied under a different line and was duly accepted. My Patton site is operational, click on http://my.stratos.net/~dvagricola/index.html Good luck. Notify Administrator about this message?
