Patton records in Pennsylvania prior to 1850

Continuing my series of transcribed records I will now present a series of records from about a dozen counties in Pennsylvania relating to various lines. This is a large file, about 60 pp when printed out. Most of the data concern Chester and Lancaster Counties, two of the "older" counties. Note that Cumberland County is NOT included. I have so much on this county that it goes into another file.

Comments are always welcome. Happy hunting!

I believe Col. John Patton married Brigetta Huling Bird. They married Dec 17,
1762. She was the widow of William Bird--another Ironmaster of Berks County. I
have John Patton as a vestry man in Episcopal Church in Reading, PA on 27 May
1765, with his step-son Mark Bird. Can you confirm?

above are given in order a bit more than half the names of this twp. Those marked
* are found by 1759 in Anson Co N. C. records; those marked + not found but others of
same surname found in Anson/Rowan records.

note- the above checked from original lists on film. It is possible I missed a
few names as there were thousands of names each year so I only checked twps where
Pattons were known to live. Need to check the typed and indexed transcripts made
by Chester Co Hist Soc.

1783 muster list for Capt McCallen, 1st Battal., 15 May 1783. PA Arch 5: VII: 74.
NOTE- the muster list here annotated to attempt to determine which twp(s) the men listed were from. It appears they were from Londonderry Twp. Lancaster Co Pa Militia lists

(Penna Archives, series V Vol 5 p 70)
First Battalion, Lancs Militia- date? Capt Wm Brisben [Brisbane] (1), Ensign Geo Whitehill (2)

2nd cl- Michael Graham              [Apparently the son of Jared Graham, who lived ca 1750 in eastern Salisbury twp, on Chester Co border- he was in W Nott Tp Chester Co 1737. Michael named in Jared’s will of 1777 (B 668)]
4th cl- John Douglass
       Wm Armstrong
William PATTON               (said to be the man who md Susanna Lewis 1786 in Faggs Manor)
Cristen Curtz              [1771, 1779 Carnarvon Twp tax list- this is just N of Salisbury]
Thos Slemons Jr              [1745-1815, d on Pequea] “Slemons” common in Cornwall, Devon
John Armor              [not found in tax lists]
Thomas Skiles              [1779 and 1782 Leacock tax lists- not found other twps.]
James Whitehill              [see note 2 below]
[no Lewis names found]

(1) Wm Brisbane (1758-1809), md Elizab Watson. The name Brisbane is found in Lanark, Ayr and Renfrew in Scotland.
(2) James Whitehill (SR) was b 1 Feb 1700 in Renfrewshire, or Ulster, marr twice. He lived immediately adj to Robert Patton (d 1745) of Salisbury Twp and served as admin of his estate as well as estate of Robert Patton (d 1755) of Sadsbury Twp., Lanc. Co. The latter Robert Patton md Ann JONES. JW died 2 Feb 1766 and is bur Pequea Pres Ch Cem.
James Whitehill had a large family including James, b 1 Jan 1725, above. and John (1729-1815, bur Pequea Cem, who then had a son named George (1760-1821), likely the ensign named above. Thus the Whitehill family had a very close tie to the Pattons.

The list above is only a small selection of names from the militia list in an attempt to find out where the company was enlisted. Preliminary study suggests strongly, but does not conclusively show that the men listed were largely from Salisbury Twp, on the border of Chester Co. More study is needed.

The William Patton shown above has been said to be brother to the John Patton who served in Chester Co militia and then both moved to Harrison Co Va. Here are some facts.
1. Although Pattons were active in Salisbury until about 1750, this early group moved out by 1752 or so. By the 1770's the only Patton family here on tax lists is a THOMAS PATTON line that I have never been able to connect with the other lines- see page 22.6 (bottom) of Penna book. This man left a will (1811-12) showing he had a son named William and I propose that this is the man in the above militia list. A problem here is that this family does not seem to appear in the 1790, 1800 or 1810 census?? Maybe I need to look harder.

2. In about 1787 in Fagg’s Manor, Chester Co, a William Patton md Susanna Lewis, dau of Alexander Lewis. The 1782 Coleraine tax return shows Alexander Lewis taxed on 900 acres, the largest landowner in the whole Twp. On 8 Apr 1790 William purchased a 225 acre farm in Coleraine Twp, Lanc Co from his father-in-law. Wm is on the 1790 Coleraine census. Alexander Lewis seems to be well known and an abstract of his family Bible showing dates of birth of all his children is posted on Genforum LEWIS page as message # 1639. Some LDS entries say that AL lived and died in Chester Co, which does not agree with records I have seen. If his dau did marry in Chester Co perhaps it was to be near her husband’s family?
