As I mentioned in a recent message, I plan to post various record series on this forum for the use and benefit of all Patton researchers. Today I shall post all the Patton records I have dug up from several sources concerning the Revolutionary War records in Pennsylvania. We are very fortunate that Pa kept many records at the time. The main problem facing the Patton researcher is that there was a lot of duplication of records as well as many men of the same name living in various parts to Pa, so it is VERY EASY to mix up your RW ancestor's service.
To deal with that problem I spent a lot of time comparing the service rosters for a given company, with the extant tax lists (of which there are plenty) to try to determine the area a given company was recruited from. This work is not complete and if anyone wishes to add to it of point out errors please do so!

Revolutionary War Records found in the [printed] "Pennsylvania Archives" (183)
Records are listed here as printed, chronologically. The printed index to the fifth series is printed in Series 6, in 3 volumes. NOTE- several hundred index cards for men named Patton (Patten, etc) showing Rev war service in Penna are found online at www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us Comparison of these index cards with the printed records shows that in addition to muster rolls, depreciation pay lists, etc, other sources were used for the index cards, including fine books, court records, etc. This site explains the nature of the various record series. In addition some muster lists not printed in the Penna Archives were printed by Egle in his “notes and queries”, and doubtless some local historical societies have other lists. It will thus be seen that the Rev War military records of Pennsylvania are a huge treasure trove and it would take much time and dedication to track down all possible records for a given individual. Many men, especially officers, appear multiple times in the records, sometimes in different organizations. In the fifth series alone there are some 75 citations for “John Patton”, pertaining to perhaps some 21 different men, according to one thoughtful article.

Bettinger, Robt Minor,Saml Silas, Francis Ennis etc. [ A Francis Ennis was in Lack Twp, Cumberland Co in 1778 along w/ a Jas PATTON, and lived long enough to receive a pension. There is no clear idea as to where these men came from.]

588-9 ELEVENTH PA. REGT Raised 27 Sept 1776, incorporated into the 10th Pa on 24 June 1778. First Lieut Robert PATTON, from 2nd Lt. Captured and not exchanged until 3 Jan 1781. On 1 Feb 1781 Col. Humpton certifies that he was entitled to a Captaincy upon the resignation of Capt George Ross, on 1 April 1778. “Col. Richard Humpton was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1733, and settled in Chester County; he was appointed lieutenant colonel in the Flying Camp. July 16, 1776, from which he was transferred to the Colonelcy of the Eleventh; at the close of the war he was col. of the Second; he was Adjutant General of Pennsylvania under Governor McKean, and died Dec. 21, 1804, and was buried in the Friends’ grave-yard, at Caln, in Chester county.”

(1) Wm Brisbane (1758-1809), md Elizab Watson.
(2) James Whitehill (SR) was b 1 Feb 1700 in Renfrewshire, or Ulster, marr twice. He lived immediately adj to Robert Patton (d 1745) of Salisbury Twp and served as admin of his estate as well as estate of Robert Patton (d 1755) of Sadsbury Twp., Lanc. Co. The latter Robert Patton md Ann JONES. JW died 2 Feb 1766 and is bur Pequea Pres Ch Cem.
James Whitehill had a large family including James, b 1 Jan 1725, above. and John (1729-1815, bur Pequea Cem, who then had a son named George (1760-1821), likely the ensign named above. Thus the Whitehill family had a very close tie to the Pattons.
The above analysis should demonstrate that William Patton who served w/ this militia group was in fact from Salisbury Twp, and surely theco- executor of the will of his father Thomas in 1812. This conclusion shows that the service claim in DAR application for William Patton in national # 699, 644 (submitted 1983, approved 1986) is incorrect. In said application a different William Patton is named, who was born on 21 April 1761 in Penna (not Va as given on the application) and died in Harrison Co Va. on 28 July 1826. This latter man had a large desecendancy. Efforts will be made to find a RW service record for him.
