Dear fellow Patton researchers- As some of you know I have been posting data on my personal website which pertains to the Patton family. I found out this week that I have used up all my free web space and cannot add any new files without setting up a new "domain" which can get a bit costly. Since I am doing this just for fun and to share files I have decided to post some of the plain text files here, so as to free up webspace on my own site. This has the slight disadvantage that all the formatting is removed so it will take some looking through the files to see if there is anything you could use. The following is a file of about 56 pp of text dealing with mostly Augusta Co Va and daughter counties, such as Montgomery plus a few others- Albemarle, Fairfax, Frederick, Greenbrier, Monroe, Rockbridge etc. HAPPY HUNTING! "Va. ref" Below I have assembled a number of useful sources. They are NOT in as logical order as I would wish but this is a first try. There are about 56 pp of materials here. Some numbered references first, then alphabetically by county: Augusta Co is found thru about p 21 (19) Kegley, F B, "Kegley's Va. Frontier” Patton, Matthew 77. 18 Dec. 1754. Joan fairfax From: Joanjmm@aol.com <Joanjmm@aol.com> you will note that when I first wrote you about this deed, I thought it was referring to Martha Patton as the wife of James, but after I found out that James Patton, Esquire died in 1824, I realized that this deed refers to the children of James Patton, Esquire and Mary Ann Seymour Slaughter (sister of Eleanor Clifton Slaughter) Patton - evidently, James, Esquire and Mary Ann Seymour Patton were deceased and their children were selling the rights to Clifton to a Thomas W. This list compiled from Summers Annals which gives ministers but not bond information, plus Kegley Early Adv vol II which was compiled from microfilm of original bonds and several other sources. Kegley seems to give date of bond and Summers the date of marriage- this is not clear. Edward Morgan was a Methodist minister (see Kegley), and Richard Whitt was (I believe) Presbyterian; see Whitt notes. Samuel Patton was surety for Matilda and Jennet also. need to add to this list from Kegley! In some abstracts this is called Vol. “A” but is not so designated at the courthouse. This register is a handwritten and indexed recent copy of two series of records, (1) the original marriage bonds, showing date of bond, parent(s) of the bride, and security for the bride. This series contains lower numbers. (2) The minister’s returns, showing actual date of the ceremony, but NOT the other information. Often both sets of records survives for each marriage, sometimes only one or the other. Summers in his “Annals of SW Va” gives ministers returns, and Kegley in “Early Adventurers II” gives the bond information. I have combined the two, plus added some date obtained in person on 23 April 2001, but the above is still not quite correct and complete. In the original marr register the dates for Agnes and Matilda are shown as reversed so it is unclear which refers to which, and I doubt the dates for John and Saml were one year apart. Marriages after 1953 begin with volume “1" and continue... I did not look at these at all. va.marMontgomery Co Va tax lists 1787-1812 LDS film # 1 870 165 1787 name of taxable w males above 21 wm 16-21 b 16+ B <16 horses cattle Patton, David same - - - 4 6 Henry (Maj) " - 2 3 10 44 Thomas (Sr) " 1* - - 14 17 --- list 3: (frame 47): Patton, Samuel same - - - 1 - 1788 frame 67, list 1 wm 16-21 blacks horsescattle Thomas Patton [Sr] same 1* - 14 - *[John] David " " - - 3 - James " " - - 2 - Henry " (Maj) " 1# 2 12 1 #[Samuel] ---- list 2 frame 87: Thomas Patton " - - 1 1 [first yr] William Patton " - - 2 - 1789 list 1, begins frame 117 James Patton " - - - 2 Thomas Patton (Sr) " 2* - - 2 *John, .....
