Judith, In the 1757 John Patton will, it states, "...Elder Children are already Portioned off", but does not name said elder children.Others have identified them as Matthew, John Jr., Samuel, Benjamin and Lydia Patton.Virginia land records show that in 1747 John Sr., John Jr. and Matthew all acquired land on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac that had been patented to Robert Green.Said land was located in what is now Pendleton Co., WV.All four of these "elder sons" also appeared in South Fork 1749 Road Orders, as did a William Patton. So there was a John Patton Sr. and four sons living in what is now Pendleton Co.(Daughter Lydia married Harmonas Alkire who lived further north on the South Fork.)
Is the Pendleton County John Patton a different man than the one in Rockbridge Co?(Land records do show that a John Patton acquired 200 acres on 27 Feb 1750-1751 in "Bordens Great Tract".)Or, while John Sr., in 1755, sold the 453 acres on the South Fork that he had acquired in 1747, could he have earlier, in 1750-51, bought the 200 acres in what is now Rockbridge Co. and at some point moved there?
Or what?An clarification from anyone would be appreciated.
