Re: Mary PATTON, daughter of Matthew PATTON & Rebecca BARNETT, reportedly married William McGOUGH in 1799 according to 2 December 1972 issue of PATTON FAMILY MAGAZINE.This information seems to conflict with reports that Nancy CARSON married said Wm McGough on 18 April 1779 (in SC?) and was still his wife at the time of Wm's death in Jones County GA ca 1823.Seeking more data on Mary PATTON and her reported marriage to Wm. McGough. Please consider this issue in the context of the following Posting from GenForum McGough & Carson Forums.

Hello Lynne: The couple you reference, William McGough and Nancy Carson, are, I believe, my GGGG Grand-Parents. Several questions:
1. Could you please share with me your source of information for the 18 April 1779 date on which you say that Wm. McGough & Nancy Carson were married? This is a very specific and very precise date that I never before have seen. Is this from a fanily bible or from parish records or from Court-House or Justice of the Peace or County Records? Also, I must ask how you have come to understand that this Nancy's maiden name might have been Carson. Other Court Documents, below, never quite state that Nancy's maiden name was Carson, though we have considered that a strong possibility, and would like to prove that. Perhaps you can help us to clear this up.
2. Another source (Edward McGough Website at HTTP://WWW.CLAN-McGough_History.HTM) advises (at the bottom of Page 23 out of a total of 36 pp) that in 1799 William McGough married a Mary PATTON, daughter of Matthew PATTON (1742-1789) & Rebecca BARNETT (Will Chester G.S.C.). This information is reportedly from the Patton Family Magazine, 2 December 1972.
3. Still another cousin & McGough Family Researcher (Bonnie M. Eidson, at [email protected]) credibly reports that Wm. McGough died circa 1823 and court records from Jones County, GA, indicate he died without a will (intestate). These Court Records indicate that after Wm. McGough died, his Estate was administered by Nancy McGough (apparently his wife) and by two sons, Robert C. (Carson?) McGough & James C. (Carson) McGough.
4. Bonnie also cites other Jones County, GA, Court documents which indicate that William McGough's death apparently also left several children as orphans. These were Sarah McGough, Eliza McGough, and John McGough, and they apparently were "above 14 years of age" because they came into court and chose their mother, Nancy McGough, to be their legal guardian. She was duly appointed "guardian for them and for Robert McGough, under 14 and brother of said orphans and giving bond in the amount of $8,000." Cited from Jones Co., GA, Court of Ordinary, Minute Book for 1818-1825. Elsewhere in the Wm. McGough Estate administration papers James C. McGough & Thomas C. McGough also are identified as sons of Wm. McGough. Interesting to note, as repported by Bonnie M. Eidson that an Adam Carson was the Jones County Justice of the Peace during the administration of Wm. McGough's Estate.
5. Bonnie has suggested that perhaps James C. McGough & Thomas C. McGough might have been sons of Wm. McGough by another and possibly an earlier marriage; however, as yet we have seen no hard evidence to support this idea. Robert C., Sarah, Eliza, & John are identified as children of the Nancy (Maiden Name as yet unknown to us) who clearly was Wm. McGough's wife at the time of his death. This raises the question of who the earlier wife may have been. The bold assertion in the pp. of the Patton Family Magazine (2 December 1972 edition) as cited by the Edward McGough Website (page 23 of 36) that Wm. McGough married Mary Patton in 1799 at least offers us a possible candidate, although the dates do not seem to fit. Mary Patton might make more sense as an earlier wife. Your report, therefore, of a marriage between Wm. McGough and Nancy on 18 April 1779, is very interesting and potentially useful for any light it may shed in helping to clear up this mystery.
6. Bonnie notes that in January 1824 the Jones Co GA Court of Ordinary Minutes (pp 89-90) show a petition of Robert Brown against the Estate of the late Wm. McGough for deed to some land in Jones County, which is named as the "place where Elizabeth Carson, deceased, formerly lived." Hard to tell who this Elizabeth Carson might have been, but the thought occurs to me that perhaps she was Nancy's mother and that her land passed through Nancy to William McGough. Do you know anything about who Elizabeth might have been?
7. I am assuming, Lynne, that my GG Grandmother, Elizabeth McGough (b. in SC on 2 March 1802 & d. in Talbott County, GA, on 17 November 1859) who married John Cerney BARFIELD (b. ca 1808 in Jones Co GA & d. 1872 in Taylor Co GA) just might be the orphan Eliza who shows up in Jones Co court records ca 1823-24. Perhaps her formal name was Elizabeth, and Eliza was less formal.
8. I hope that you will be able to share with us any information at all that might help to better understand these marriages of Wm. McGough, perhaps to Mary Patton and Nancy (Carson?), and the relationships among the several children. If Bible or other Family Records, Parish Records, or other legal documents are available, please let us know. Or perhaps you can refer us to another researcher or family member who might have access to this data. We look forward to sharing information and to working with you.
Pleasefeel free to share my note with anyone interested or who may be able to help.
Best Wishes to you over the coming holidays!
