Well, with the Freedom of Information act you can get just about anything you want.:)
If you have the birth certificate, find out if he was born in the US or was naturalized. If he was naturalized then contact the records office of Ellis Island (not sure where in New York you would have to go to get those records) because I can guarantee that your family came on a boat. :)
You might also want to check the records over in Sicily, in the town of Patti. They have family crests and history available as well.
