Baptist Pattersons
Several months ago I posted a message on this forum entitled "Peter Patterson of Washington Twp., Fayette Co., PA."Since then I have been inundated with both posted "followups" to this posting as well as with e-mails sent directly to me requesting information about Pattersons of many different lines(all, ironically, completely unrelated to this Peter Patterson who was the subject of my original post).
This is not a complaint--not at all.I am writing this NEW post under the "Baptist Pattersons" subject because the most interesting inquiries I've received have to do with those seeking Baptist Patterson ancestors.Rather than link my replies to these queries under the original "Peter Patterson" post, I'm starting a new "chain."
One researcher contacted me directly by e-mail in July, saying that he was a descendant of a Lane P. Patterson b. abt. 1867 in PA.About a month ago I was contacted about a Robert Patterson b. abt. 1749 who m. Mary Ann Van Scyoc. Several days ago there was a post from a researcher requesting info about the possible parents of a David P. Patterson who was b. abt. 1813 in Greene Co., PA and who d. 1898 in Bullskin Twp., Fayette Co. PA.In spite of the fact that I am not related to any of these Pattersons, and in spite of the fact that I have limited free time (two teenagers, own my own business, etc.) I got interested in each of these above-cited inquiries (and in numerous others not mentioned) and in the process have learned quite a lot about Pattersons who were not Presbyterian but who were Baptist.
Many of the Pattersons who settled early in Washington Co., PA (a portion of which became Greene Co., PA) were Baptists who came from New Jersey. And many of these were from Monmouth Co., New Jersey -- specifically the town of Middletown (not Middleton).I will probably spend a great deal of time in the next few years pursuing these Pattersons, but for now I have a more urgent purpose to accomplish in this post. Two of you researchers who have recently contacted me are related. After I post this I will e-mail you privately and hook you two up.I've COMBINED the info which you both have each given me over the past few months, and it looks like this:
THOMAS PATTERSON b.? d.? may have had a son:
SAMUEL PATTERSON b.? d.? in 1830 was in Franklin Twp.,
Greene Co., PA.Samuel may have had a son:
DAVID P. PATTERSON
b. 1813 Greene Co. PA
d. 1898 Bullskin Twp., Fayette Co., PA
m. Mary Ann Lane (dau. of Herny Lane, who was in Fayette
Co., PA by 1796 & who e. 1821 in Bullskin Twp., Fayette
Co., PA.
David & his family were members of the BAPTIST church in
Pennsville, Bullskin Twp., Fayette Co., PA.In 1850 David
was living in Tyrone Twp., Fayette Co., PA (age 37)
David & Mary Ann (Lane) Patterson had 5 children:
1. JOHN PATTERSON b. abt. 1846
2. WILLIAM PATTERSON b. abt. 1830 in Westmoreland Co., PA; d. 1902 Bullskin Twp., Fayette Co., PA; was
living in 1880 in South Bridgeport, Fayette Co., PA;
m. Amanda Slonaker (she b. abt. 1842in PA).
William & Amanda (Slonaker Patterson) had 6 children:
i.WILLIAM H. PATTERSON b. abt. 1863 PA

Mary Jane Cole (she b. 4 Mar 1870; she d.
30 Apr 1947); Lane P. & Mary Jane (Cole)
Patterson had son:
GEORGE WASHINGTON PATTERSON
•••who was grandfather of researcher #1•••
iii.DAVID PATTERSON b. abt. 1871 PA
iv.FRANKLIN B. PATTERSON b. abt. 1877 PA
v.BYRON CULLEN PATTERSON b. abt.1878
vi.AVALINA PATTERSON b. abt. 1878 PA
m. James Shedden & had dau.:
STELLA SNEDDEN
m. James Wiedeman; had dau:

m. Frank Dean: had son:
•••who is researcher #2•••
3. MARY PATTERSON b. abt. 1843
4. DAVID PATTERSON b. abt. 1846
5. HENRY PATTERSON b. abt. 1849
So, researchers #1 and #2 who contacted me, you share a common ancestor: William Patterson b. abt. 1838 who m. Amanda Slonaker.
As for the rest of you Patterson researchers who have recently contacted me, I will get back to you as time permits. In the meantime, if you have a Patterson ancestor who in PA by 1810, and who was Baptist, you would do well to sniff around Middletown, Monmouth Co., NJ for earlier generations.
Janice Patterson-Rosenthal
P.S. Could some kind person out there explain to me why, although I carefully indented the generations in the "family tree" above, when I previewed it I saw that there were no longer any indentations and it all looks like ajumbled mess.Spaces were added here and there, too, which are not my doing. What am I doing wrong?
