PATTERSON - The surname of PATTERSON or PATERSON simply means the son of PATRICK, and belongs to a large class of surnames similarly formed. Many of the name are to be found in Scotland, in Stirlingshire, Aberdeenshire and Dumfriesshire, where the spelling is generally PATERSON; in Ireland this surname is very numerous in the counties of Antrim, Down, Armagh, Londonderry and Tyrone, where the spelling is usually PATTERSON. The coat-of-arms of the Bishop of Ross, a member of the PATERSON family is: Argent three pelicans feeding their young or in nests vert on a chief azure as many mullets of the field. The other PATTERSON arms vary slightly from this or are similar to it.
