SAMUEL CAMPBELL PATTERSON, son of ROBERT and MARGARET DOROTHY (LAUGHLIN), was born May 20, 1856, on his father’s farm.
MR. PATTERSON married, Jan. 1, 1884, ELIZA MARTHA, daughter of WILLIAM and SARAH J. (BROWN) STEELE, and they are the parents of the following children:
1. WILLIAM STEELE, born Nov. 22, 1884; educated in the township schools ad at the New (pg. 804) Alexandria Academy; he started farming by managing the farm of G. W. Stewart, and later for a time that of JUDGE STEELE; he later went to Canada and remained there farming for about two years; he then returned to Westmoreland County and purchased the farm known as the William B. Moore farm, which he still owns; he has improved this property many ways, building a silo, and conducting a model dairy farm; he builds up the soil and was the first farmer to introduce a tractor in the county; married ADA RUMBAUGH; their children are: SAMUEL C., WILLIAM S., MARTHA E., SARAH JANE, ROBERT, and JAMES E. 2. ROBERT CARLYLE, born July 13, 1886, died by drowning, Jan. 31, 1908, while skating on the Beaver River with MISS VELLA VALERIA WYLIE, a daughter of DR. WYLIE, of Wilkinsburg, who was president of the board of trustees of Geneva College, where young PATTERSON and MISS WYLIE were students; MR. PATTERSON was a member of the junior class, of the Eleutherian Literary Society, and of the Varsity football team of 1907; he was a general favorite among all members of the college. 3. CLARA SARAH, married ARTHUR C. BURKHART, of Greensburg, Pa., and they have one child, ARTHUR C., JR. 4. GEORGE ROBB, born Oct. 5, 1892; now a member of Company I, One Hundred and Tenth Pennsylvania Regiment. 5. JOHN SAMUEL, born April 1, 1899; also a member of Company I, One Hundred and Tenth Pennsylvania Regiment ; 6. GLEN LAUGHLIN, born Feb. 22, 1902. 7. JOSEPH WALKER, born March 15, 1904.
