SAMUEL PATTERSON, founder of the American branch, was born in 1766, in County Down, Ireland, and was trade a weaver. In 1793 he emigrated to the U. S., landing in Philadelphia, where for the space of one year he worked at his trade. He then went to Franklin Co., and in 1797 settled in Derry Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pa., where he purchased a farm, thereafter combining agriculture with the practice of his trade. He was a Reformed Presbyterian, or Covenanter, and was instrumental in organizing a church of that denomination at New Alexandria, the first in the place. Previous to that MR. PATTERSON, twice every year, held a service in his house for those of his faith, and before the organization of the New Alexandria congregation he and his family sometimes attended church at Greensburg, walking the entire distance, eleven miles. Shortly after landing in Philadelphia, MR. PATTERSON married CATHERINE CAMPBELL, who was born in 1776, and had been one of the fellow passengers on the voyage. MR. and MRS. PATTERSON were the parents of twelve children, one of whom, ROBERT P., is mentioned below. The death of SAMUEL PATTERSON occurred Oct. 14, 1830, and his widow passed away on June 17, 1836. )

ROBERT P. PATTERSON, son of SAMUEL and CATHERINE (CAMPBELL) PATTERSON, was (pg. 802A SAMUEL C. PATTERSON and on pg. 802D ELIZA MARTHA PATTERSON) born April 23, 1817, on his father’s farm, and received his education in the schools of the township and of New Alexandria. His trade was that of carpenter, and about 1835 or 1836 he was employed to do some of the work on the house belonging to the estate known as the “Reverend John Cannon farm...” A number of years later MR. PATTERSON became the owner of the property, and in 1868 built the barn which is still standing. It was originally sixty by forty-five feet, and in 1891 SAMUEL CAMPBELL PATTERSON added forty feet to its length. The structure is one of the large basement barns to be found in that community. Like his father MR. PATTERSON was a member of the Covenanter church, holding the office of ruling elder. He cooperated with the Bible Society and was an ardent advocate of the temperance cause and a strong anti-slavery man. MR. PATTERSON married, March 23, 1853, MARGARET DOROTHY, daughter of JOHN and MARY (ARMSTRONG) LAUGHLIN, and their children were: CLARA, born Feb. 11, 1854, died May 10, 1871; SAMUEL CAMBPELL, mentioned below; and MARGARET ESTELLE, born Nov. 16, 1869, now the wife of WILLIAM McCLARREN MOORE. In 1884 MR. PATTERSON left the farm and during the remainder of his life resided in New Alexandria. On July 24, 1889, he passed away. The death of MRS. PATTERSON occurred Aug. 9, 1897.

SAMUEL CAMPBELL PATTERSON, son of ROBERT and MARGARET DOROTHY (LAUGHLIN), was born May 20, 1856, on his father’s farm, and acquired his earliest education in the township schools, afterwards attending the New Alexandria Academy. It was his intention to follow a professional career, but in 1884 circumstances caused him to abandon this purpose. He took possession of the homestead farm and decided to make agriculture the business of his life... He became a model farmer and stock-raiser, also engaging in dairy farming...In 1914 MR. PATTERSON retired to New Alexandria....In association with Judge John B. Steele and others, MR. PATTERSON organized the First National Bank of New Alexandria and has ever since been its vice-president...He is a member of the boards of such organizations as the Union Cemetery Association...He was on the board of directors of the West Savings and Trust Co. of Greensburg, and is still a stockholder. Adhering to the religious traditions of his family, MR. PATTERSON serves as a ruling elder in the Covenanter Church. He is a member of the American Bible Society and the Home Societies of New Alexandria..
