Hi Jason -
I suspect someone has already sent you this, but just in case. You'll find Amanda Patterson and your Burtsfield in here. I have a copy of this little booklet. Amanda was actually granddaughter to the immigrants. Her brother, John Patterson, was my grandmother's grandfather.
Where did you get the name Scott, as John Patterson's wife's name???
Best,
Kristen
The History of the Patterson Family
Compiled by ROBERT A. PATTERSON
PRESS OF THE CHRONICLE CARROLLTON 1909
THE descendants of John Patterson to the sixth generation celebrated, on Wednesday, September 23, 1908, at the home of J. C. and G. S. Patterson of Pattersonville, Carroll county, Ohio, the one-hundredth anniversary of his coming from Ireland to the United States. There are about two hundred and sixty living descendants, and about one hundred and forty were present to participate in this most pleasant reunion. The forenoon was spent in a general handshaking and becoming better acquainted with those from a distance, of whom there was quite a large number. After a bountiful dinner, which was enjoyed by all, the meeting was called to order by R. A. Patterson, acting as temporary chairman. Speeches were delivered by Revs. Patterson of West Virginia, Morledge of Cumberland, Ward of Minerva, Harris of Mechanicstown and Spooner of Augusta, Ohio.
A short history of the family was read which was interesting. A part of it follows:
John and Mary Patterson and their three children of the County Donegal, Ireland, started for America some time in June, 1808. In calm weather sailing ships could make the trip in forty days. The Pattersons met with storms and were lost at sea, prolonging their voyage to ninety days. They landed at New York in September, and from there went to Allegheny county, Pa., taking up a quarter section of land where Allegheny City now stands. Staying there about two years they went to a farm in Washington county, Penn., where they lived eight or nine years. While on this farm their youngest daughter Rebecca was born and their eldest daughter Jane was married to William Cassidy.
In the spring of 1819 John Patterson entered a farm in Harrison township, Carroll Co., Ohio, then Stark Co. , drove a stake and returned to his home in Pennsylvania. He then took his two sons, Robert, aged 18, and John, aged 16, across the river to Steubenville, and from there they went alone on foot to Centerville, now Carrollton. From the inn where their father had arranged for their lodging and board they followed a deer path and stopped at the deer lick, which marked the place of their future home. In one week's time, with the use of two axes and an augur, they built a cabin and straightway went to clearing the land. Then in the fall of 1819 John and Mary Patterson, and the others of the family, joined the two sons in their new home. They built a log cabin on the east side of the farm.
John Patterson died September 25, 1827. On March 8, 1833, John and Robert Patterson entered into an agreement that at their mother's death John Patterson would give Robert Patterson a deed for his share of the farm, the east half, and should receive from Robert Patterson as consideration money $40 recorded in Carroll-co. records. Their mother died in 1852 and this agreement was made good on August 9, 1854, by John giving Robert a deed for 80 acres of the east side of the farm and receiving the $400. Robert Patterson lived on this farm the remainder of his life and left it to his second wife and three sons. The farm was sold out of the Patterson name in 1892.
