Who was James Father?

James Bettis born 1733 and died 1794 in Franklin Co. NC

Most Bettis researchers has his father as John Bettis and Mary Dozier but I have never found anything that will
prove this theory. After years of researching North Carolina for his father I now Believe its possible that his parents were Edward Bettis and Elizabeth Wyatt of
Prince George Co. VA.

From what I have found James Bettis may have travel from
Prince Geo. Co. Va. with the Pattersons and the Wyatts
and thur some land deeds of Edward Bettis and Elizabeth Wyatt. Edward and Elizabeth must have died before 1737
because James was an orphan.

I know that the Pattersons that were in Prince Geo Co.Va.
can be found in Franklin, NC and Wilson Co. Tn.

James Bettis appears on Tax list with the Wyatts in Granville, NC

(Note Lewis Patterson died in Granville, NC and his sons were in Franklin Co., NC and then to Wilson Co. Tn where
James Bettis sons and son in law migrated to and was there by 1806.)

Prince George Co. Virginia Research;
In Prince George, VA Records 1733-1799

Court Order Book 1737-40;
Churchwardens of Martin Brandon Parish to bind James Bettis, son of
Edward Bettis to some proper person, as the law direct for poor orphans.

Prince George Co. Virginia 1713 to 1728
Edward Bettis and Elizabeth his wife of Prince Geo to National Harrison
of Surry Co., Esq. 60 acres in the church old fields at a place called
Marti's Brandon in Pr Geo Co;
bounded by Edward Avery and land lately purchased by Harrison from
John Sykes and his wife Frances (Wyatt).Land is the middle third of that
land where Anthony Wyatt lived at the time of his death and which he
was seized of in the right of Elizabeth his wife and afterwards decended to John Wyatt, heir at law of Elizabeth, who also dying seized thereof, land
descended to his three sisters, with one third to said Elizabeth Bettis
one of the said heirs.

This Prince Geo Co. Deed;
Indenture (Deed of Exchange) made the 13th day of December, 1715, between Nicholas Jarrard of Prince George County, Planter, and Nathaniel Harrison, Esq., of Surry County, tract of land to Nathaniel Harrison lying in the Parish of Martins Brandon in Prince George County, previously conveyed by Anthony Wyatt, Elizabeth Wyatt and Nicholas Wyatt, dated the 5th day of August, 1695, and recorded in Charles City County. Tract to Nicholas Jarrard lying in Lyon's Creek Parrish, Surry County on Athamowsauek Swamp containing 427 acres and granted to the said Nathaniel Harrison by Letters of Patent bearing date of June 16, 1714. Indenture acknowledged in Court on December 13, 1715, by Nicholas Jarrard and Elizabeth, his wife, appeared and relinquished her right of dower. DEEDS, ETC. 1713-1728, page 88, Prince George County, Virginia.

A Tillman Patterson was in Prince George Co. Va and was the
son of Joseph and Jane Patterson. We find Tillman Patterson in Franklin Co. Tn and was a witness when
James Bettis sells land to his son-in-law Harrison Harris.
I can not prove that Tillman Patterson in Franklin, NC was a son of the Prince Geo Tillman but I expect it possible.

Tillman Patterson owned land on the South side of Jones Hole Swamp.
John and Francis Wyatt were witness to a land deed between
Thomas Burge and wife Mary to John Burge.

There is some unproven research that John and Francis were
Elizabeth Wyatt brothers.

Daniel Wyatt Sells Land in Granville NC
May 2, 1763 Daniel Wyatt to Constantine Newton for 10lbs., 200 acres at Thomas Mullins line which was granted 1760 Wts; Joseph Farr, Wm Hunt

In Franklin Co., NC Daniel Wyatt owned land on Mares Branch Possible the same Daniel in Granville as a Daniel appears on Tax List but can not be PROVEN at this time.

So the close association of these names leads me to believe
that there must be a connection to these families

James Bettis names his son Wyatt Bettis

Tillman Patterson Bettis in Wilson Co. Tn about the same time as Wyatt and William Bettis with needed Documentation
we now have leads that William Bettis married Sarah Patterson, Sarah being a sister to Tillman Patterson of Franklin Co. North Carolina.

We have Polly Bettis of Wilson Co. Tn;

Polly Bettis married Adam Harpole 15 April, 1812
Wilson Co., Tn. certain to be a daughter of William and Sarah Patterson. Polly named her daughter Sarah Patterson Harpole. Sarah Patterson Harpole is buried in Navarro Co., Texas.

I have not found who James Bettis was bind to, but I
suspect it was a Wyatt.

Any one that may have any leads to Edward Bettis and Elizabeth Wyatt I would appreciate any information.

And anything on the Pattersons.

J.Scott
