Since James and Minnie are in Franklin Co. GA in both 1920 and 1910, I looked for Pattersons in Franklin Co in 1900 and found this family:
Dooley, Franklin Co, GA
Patterson, Joel T. age 46 b. Feb 1854 in GA, married 12 yrs. both parents b. GA, occ Farmer
wife Mattie J. age 47 b. Feb 1853 in NC, 1 child born, 1 living, both parents b. NC
son Ernest age 17 b. Aug 1883 in GA, both parents b. GA
dau Minnie age 16 b. Apr 1884 in GA, both parents b. GA
son Robert M. age 9 b. June 1880 in NC, father b. GA, mother b. NC
Apparently Mattie is Joel's second wife and the mother of Robert, but not the mother of Ernest and Minnie.
There's no 1890 census, but 1880 has this couple:
Wilmot, Banks Co, GA
Patterson, Joel T. age 25 b. GA, father b. SC, mother b. GA
wife Ellen M. age 24 b. GA, both parents b. GA
The 1870 census:
Poplar Springs, Banks Co, GA
Patterson, Amy C. age 50 b. GA
Joel T. age 16 b. GA
Robert M. age 14 b. GA
