Margaret Carr and James William Patterson lived Ste Genevieve Co MO 1810-1840
According the Dr. Beverly Allen Barrett, Margaret Carr and James William Patterson were the parents of his mother Margaret Patterson Barrett.Margaret Patterson married John Stephens Barrett around 1811 and they raised a family of around 10 children in the Saline township of Ste. Genevieve Co. MO.Dr. Beverly Barrett also indicated his Patterson grandfather died in Ste. Genevieve Co.Since 70-80 year old James Patterson was listed in the 1830 census for the Saline twsp but not listed in the 1840 census, it is probable that he died sometime during that 10 year span.
There were two other Pattersons listed in the 1830 census for the Saline twsp, Joseph and John, who lived adjacent to each other. Most likely these two younger Patterson men were sons of James William Patterson.Joseph and John were both between 40 and 50 years old and were both married with children.Joseph's wife was 30-40 years old and they had two sons under 5, two sons 5-10, one son 10-15, one daughter under 5 and one daughter 15-20.John's wife was 40-50 years old and they had one son under 5, one son 5-10, one son 10-15, one son 15-20, one daughter 10-15 and two daughters 15-20.John S. Barrett was listed a few households below these two Pattersons on the Census page.
I do not know what happened to Joseph and his family, but John was still living in the Saline twsp in 1840 and his oldest married son lived near by.The three youngest sons and two daughters still lived at home.
By 1850, John and his wife had probably died since they are not listed in the Ste. Genevieve Co. Census. The three youngest sons are listed living close to each other: 25 year old John married to Caroline and living a couple of houses away Lorenzo Barrett Patterson married to Eveline and Lorenzo's siblings Ralph and Margaret Patterson are listed as living with him.Oldest brother James lived in Madison Co. MO with his wife Sarah A. and their three children Sarah J.? M., George W. and Margarette.
By 1860 James had moved back to Ste. Genevieve Co and lived in the Jackson twsp. with his children George, Margeret and Elizabeth. His wife Sarah had probably died. There is a 20 year old Martha E. Patterson living in the household who may have been his new wife or maybe was his oldest daughter formerly listed as Sarah J.? M.Lorenzo and wife Nancy E. (Eveline?) Patterson lived in the Saline twsp with their children Robert L., Elizabeth, Arpy E., Mary F., John R., Thomas H., and William H. Patterson.Do not know where John and Caroline were in 1860 or after.
Do not know where James was after 1860 but his son George had served in a TN unit during the Civil War, married a girl in TN and then migrated from TN to Green Co. MO around 1871.
Do not know what happened to Lorenzo and his family after 1860 except there is a tombstone for a Lorenzo B. Patterson in the Old Stone Cemetery of Ste. Genevieve Co. near Coffman with the date Aug. 24, 1880.It is unclear if this is the birthdate or death date.It also says he was the son of John and Mary. Also buried in that cemetery are John Patterson (1854-1946) and his spouse Mary E. Patterson (1858-1938).They may be the parents of that Lorenzo B. Barrett buried in the same cemetery. However, John may be the son of the older Lorenzo B. Barrett as he was the same age as the older man's son John and he may have named this son for his father.
Does anyone know more information about these Pattersons and their connection to the family of John S. Barrett?
Thanks,
Lynn
