Hi Evelyn,
Thanks for the reply to my posting. I am sending for copies of the death records in case they give some useful information - interestingly, the age at death for James would make his birth year 1847 rather than ca 1845 as calculated from Census data!
I know there was a tradition in many Scottish families of naming children for parents, grandparents, etc., but that it was not always strictly followed. The same names found in the families of your James and mine therefore may be significant.
I will let you know if any other information surfaces.
