James Paton and Mary Preston (b. Scotland ca 1845-1851)

I am looking for information on my great grandparents, James Paton (b. ca 1845, Scotland; d. between 1918-1925) and Mary Paton (Preston) (b. ca 1850/51, Scotland), and their ancestors. Acording to the birth record of daughter, Annie, they were married 2 Jan 1873, Forfar, Angus, but I can find no record of the marriage in the Statutory Register of Marriages at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (non-conformists?). They moved to Hull, Yorkshire between 1873-1875.
