Hello, Linda,
So far I only have one Paton in my tree. She was Mary Paton and married Lewis Carville, I think in Lecropt, which is near Stirling itself, on the borders of perthshire and not far from Clacks. They were my gt.gt.gt.grandparents. Their dau., Mary Carville, was born in 1811. Did your James or any of his sons have a dau. called Mary Paton, do you know? I thought it worth a try, as it is within a relatively small area.
Regards,
Margaret.
