W R Paton, Elephant Keeper d Devon 1871

Does anyone know anything about W R Paton, Elephant Keeper to HRH Duke of Edinburgh, who died in a freak train accident in 1871. The elephant he was caring for him crushed him when the train in which they were travelling swung while going round a corner. He is buried in Wolborough Churchyard, Newton Abbot, Devon, UK. He was born either in 1831 or 1840, and we think may be a brother of John G Paton, the missionary to the New Hebrides (a distant forbear of mine). The Duke of Edinburgh of the time did not know much about W R Paton, but believed that he was the son of a minister in the west of Scotland. We do know that he served in the British Navy on HMS Galatea. Can anyone help?
