John Packwood Patey: Of Cornwall

John Packwood Patey, of Cornish heritage, lived at Bendigo, Australia, and Seaford, Victoria, Australia until his death in the 1950s. Mr. Patey taught elocution classes and operated a guest house, "Fernlea," on the coast outside Melbourne for many years. He always described his family history as being descended from Cornwall.
Originally, Mr. Patey's family had come to Australia in the middle 1800s and settled in the Bendigo region, where gold was mined. Mr. Patey's first work was as a mining crew's tool man. He was first married to Clara Johns, also of a Cornish heritage, and their son was Len Patey, an Australia poet who died around the end of World War I.
After the death of his first wife, Mr. Patey married Nellie Riley Gunn, who owned "Fernlea," and they continued to run the guest house for many years. There were four children in the household: Edith Gunn, Ralph Gunn, Kenneth Patey and my mother, Shirley Patey.
Mr. Patey took the middle name of Packwood because he claimed to be connected to the Packwoods.
When my family, including my mother, were in Australia in 1997, we went to the area where John Packwood Patey's family had their gold mine in Bendigo and my mother pointed out various sites from her childhood memories. There are many records available there of Pateys, for those who are looking for missing branches.
Thanks, Liz.
