I am doing research on this topic and following is the answer toy your question. currently I am collecting data about Patels and their history
The people known today as Patels or Patidars are the descendants of people known in the last century as KANBI which is derived from the word “Kutumbin”, meaning the family. This large and influential caste has its home in Kutch, Saurashtra, North Gujarat, Central and South Gujarat. They have spread all over the world today.
It all started with a family clearing the land, and cultivating it. He employed craftsmen and workers to work on the farm and maintain his farms. Other tradesmen and workers eventually settled around and small towns took shapes. He eventually became the head of the town, known as the Kanbi. He was responsible to keep all the documents of land owing. The documents were written on PATTA, and the person keeping the record was known as PATTALIK, which eventually to PATEL.
