NC Holland And Pate Connections

There are genealogical connections between the Pate and Holland families in North Carolina:

http://www.hollandfamily.us/namesp.htm#Pate

Bryant Handley Pate, Sr., was the father of Sheriff DeWitt Clinton, of Wayne County. The Dewitt surname is prominent among Dutch Protestants, defenders of Primitive Baptists in Holland. DeWitt Clinton Pate was the father of Henry Franklin Pate, Primitive Baptist preacher of Belfast-Patetown, buried in the Old Pelt Graveyard, in which are also buried Lanes.

These show connections, now lost, to North Carolina Van Pelts (Laenen van Pelts) from Holland.

Who were the Hollands before they were Hollands?
