The below was posted today to Jean-Pierre Paats Williams, and others:

This is an addendum to the subject note, to add an umlaut to the Lanen surname.

It is tradition in my Pate/Pett/Pelt family that we liked to have the best horses. There is an old family story, that came down from Henry Franklin Pate, that an Anthony Pate was caught stealing horses, and had his ears cut of for the offense. Samuel Pate, the hatter, was a great horseman.

Dobbs County Court House was burned to deprive us of records of much that went on in what is now Wayne County. The below was posted to the Pelt Genealogy forum by Briscoe Price, showing a 1790 Anthony Vanpelt that strongly suggests descent from (or kin to) the Anthony van Pelt, to whom was registered the commercial sloop in Edenton, in the era of the settlement of Patetown--and death of Thoroughgood Pate:

My great grandfather Henry Franklin Pate is buried in the Old Pelt Graveyard, on the south side of Patefs Branch of Stoney Creek, directly across the creek from the church. The reason that graveyard is called the Old Pelt Graveyard is that it is where Laenen van Pelts, who are now known as Lanes in Wayne County, are buried. It is no coincidence that the settlement of the Lost Colony and the City of Raleigh were both led by Lanes.

It all goes back to the management of the settlement of the Welsh Indians on the PeeDee River by Charles Pate, son of Major Thoroughgood Pate, and John Monk (Monck), nephew of the Duke of Albemarle, Admiral-General George Monck, who shared with Captain-Commissioner Phineas Pett/ Pate the blame for the defeat of the English Navy at Medway River. This is not going to go away.

A large area was cleared for settlement of Prices (Brices), Pelts (Pates), and such.
