Many researchers say that Matthew Pate died in Halifax Co., VA, on 1 June 1780. Others say that Jeremiah Pate died 1 June 1780 in New Kent Co., VA.
I would guess that the confusion comes from the entry in John Christian's daybook that says that Judith Pate's father Matthew died 1 Jun. 1780. Other sources say that her father was Jeremiah and her grandfather Matthew.
Is there any evidence from county records or other documents that substantiate the death of either man? Do the tax records of either county shed any light on the year either man died?
