There is a privately published history of the family from which descends Mary Batts Pate, owner of the Preacher Batts Farm on Patetown Road,in Wayne County, North Carolina. Mrs. Pate owns a copy of this book entitled ONE MAN‘S FAMILY. Below this title is the coat of arms of the Batten family, and the subtitle “Batten, The Ransom Batten Genealogical Record“. On the helm of the arms stand three ostrich feathers. On the shield are three battle axes. The Battens were proud warriors, descended from English nobility, ship owners and captains. In this history the surname Batten is randomly spelled as Batten and Batts, indicating a common family knowledge of the synonymy. Ransom Batten served in the Civil War, going to Goldsboro from his home adjoining the Jasper Pittman homeplace in Johnston County, to buy a fine horse for $500, so he would not have to serve in the infantry. The Ransom Batten family history says that this family originated in Northampton County. Northampton County is the location of Pate’s Delight, Dr. Samuel Peete’s home on the headwaters of Patocasie Creek, which flows into the Roanoke River. In previous notes I have mentioned the Pittman family, who were so prominent in the development of the Roanoke Valley. Among the many families related to the Ransom Batten family are Roses, Mozingos and Creeches, involved in the writing of the Ransom Batten genealogy. The Battens and Creeches of Johnston County are kin of my physician Dr. Christopher Pate. A Christopher Pate was one of the great family of the Pett dynasty of English shipwrights, whose surname is spelled both Pate and Pett in the Stepney Green church records. The very prominent English family of Sir John Pate changed their surname to Rose, following problems they had in the English Civil War. Mozingos lived on the Pitt County portage at Bell Arthur, and now live on original Patetown grant lands in Wayne County. The Leslie Williams family lived directly across Patetown Road from the Preacher Batts Farm. The Williams family were principal settlers in Martin (surname of the captain of Arthur Pett’s ship Unity) County. The main Williams holdings were in the area that is now the town Hamilton. Hamilton leads us back to the Pates of Lanarkshire in Scotland. A part of the Ransom Batten farm in Johnston County is referred to as Hamilton in deed records. Lanarkshire was the home of William Patterson, mentor of Alexander Hamilton. Pattersons were the great Roanoke River industrialists. Some day some bright young person is going to take this knotted ball of yarns, and knit from it a really interesting and coherent story. Notify Administrator about this message?
