I am hoping that someone can enlighten me as to how these following Pates are connected other that through marriage. They all live near each other at one time. Some moved together and sometimes children from one Pate family are found in the household of another Pate family.
The Pate, Hamilton and Hutton families were all in Dubuque Co., Iowa by 1836.
By 1854 Jacob, Amster and Lorenzo Pate were living in Harrison Co. Iowa, Joseph was living in Dubuque Co., Iowa and Adam was living in California. In 1880 Lorenzo was living in Fresno Co., California.
JACOB PATE was born about 1790 in Virginia. On April 15, 1832 in Dubuque Co., Iowa he married EMILY HAMILTON born about 1812 in Vermont. This is probably a second marriage of Jacob. Emily’s father was JACOB HAMILTON. Jacob and Emily’s children were Adam, Sarah, Emily, and Alfred. In 1850 Jacob and Emily were living in Washington Twp., Jones Co., Iowa next door to LORENZO & SARAH HUTTON PATE. Living with Jacob and Emily was RUDOLPH age 16 born Indiana and Sarah McPeets age 7 born in Iowa. In 1860 Jacob age 70 and Emily were living in Raglan, Harrison Co., Iowa next to LORENZO and P0LLY PATE and RUDOLPH and CORNELIA PATE. CHARLES HAMILTON age 30 born in Ohio along with Marshall age 7 and Charles age 5 Hamilton were living in the Jacob Pate household. Also a school teacher Julia Gleason and BEN LA FLESH. (Emily Hamilton’s sister Amelia was married to John LaFlesh.) In 1870 Jacob age 81 and Emily age 58 were living in Cass, Harrison Co., Iowa. Alfred Pate age 15 and Charles Hamilton age 20 were living in Jacob’s household. Jacob and Emily were neighbors to Amster Pate age 61, Rudolf Pate age 36 and Adam Pate age 24.
AMSTER PATE was born about 1810 in Indiana. He married (1) CHRISTIAN FOX July 31, 1828 in Dearborn Co., Indiana (2) DELILAH ENSLEY July 25, 1839 in Fountain Co., Indiana (3) EMILY HUTTON March 04, 1852 in Dubuque Co., Iowa. EMILY HUTTON was the daughter of MATTHEW & ANNA HAMILTON HUTTON. Anna was a sister to JACOB PATE’S wife EMILY HAMILTON PATE. The 1860 census for Raglan, Harrison Co., Iowa places Amster and Emily living close to Jacob and Emily Pate. Living in Amster’s household in 1860 was John Oliver Pate age 23 born in Kentucky. Amster and Emily’s children (1870 census Cass, Harrison Co., Iowa) were Jasper, Charles, Frank, Marion, Ann, and Ellen. Emily Hutton Pate died February 6, 1870. By 1880 it appears that Amster had died. Some of the children are found in homes of friends or relatives. ELLEN PATE age 14 is in the home of P.R. SHUPE. MARION age 19 and ANNA age 16 are in the home of AMAS MERCHANT.
JOSEPH PATE was born about 1815 in Indiana. He married (1) CATHERINE ANN BENTLY June 30, 1843 in Whitewater Twp., Dubuque Co., Iowa (2) ELIZABETH HUTTON JONES June 30, 1858. Elizabeth was the daughter of MATTHEW & ANNA HAMILTON HUTTON. Elizabeth married (1) WILLIAM H. JONES April 15, 1850 in Dubuque Co., Iowa (2) Joseph Pate June 30, 1858. The children of Joseph and Catherine (1850 census District 7, Dubuque Co., Iowa) are William C., Mary Jane, Martha Ann and Sarah. (1860 census Cascade, Dubuque Co., Iowa) Martha Ann is not listed and Carolyn and Emily are added. By 1860 Joseph was married to Elizabeth Hutton and they had one child in the census John Pate. Also living in the household was Mary, Julien and Edward Jones. Mary and Julien were Elizabeth’s step-children, Edward was Elizabeth’s son by William H. Jones. Emily was born September 22, 1857 and her mother Catherine died October 5, 1857. Joseph died while serving in the Civil War. Elizabeth died January 20, 1877. I have not found Elizabeth in a 1870 census. I thought maybe she remarried.
ADAM PATE was born about 1818 in Indiana. He married SALLY HUTTON in Dubuque Co., Iowa. Sally was the daughter of MATTHEW & ANNA HAMILTON HUTTON. In 1850 Adam and Sally was living in Dubuque Co., Iowa and had the following children, Samuel, Minerva, Eliza and Sarepta. They were living close to Joseph and Catherine Bently Pate. In 1852 Adam and Sallie, their children and Sallie’s brother Isaac Hutton crossed the plains to California. The 1860 census places the family in Elkhorn, San Jaquin Co., California. Albert, George M. and a 6 month old infant with on name has been added to the family. I have not been able to find Adam and Sally in any census after 1860. I did find their son SAMUEL PATE in the 1880 census for Fresno Co., California living next door to LORENZO D. PATE. I also found their son ALBERT in the 1880 census for Elkhorn, San Joaquin Co., California living as a boarder in the home of Margaret Lane.
LORENZO D. PATE was born about 1822 in Indiana. He married (1) SARAH HUTTON in Dubuque Co., Iowa. Sarah was born in Ohio and was the daughter of MATTHEW & ANNA HAMILTON HUTTON. The 1850 census places Lorenzo and Sarah in Washington Twp., Jones Co., Iowa with one daughter Emily age 6. They are living next door to JACOB AND EMILY HAMILTON PATE. By 1860 Sarah has probably died. In the 1860 census for Raglan, Harrison Co., Iowa LORENZO D. PATE is listed with wife POLLY age 38 born in Canada West. Also listed are Mary J. age 2, Lydia Savage 18 born Canada West and Flora Alexander age 14 born in New Hampshire. In 1860 Lorenzo is again living next door to Jacob and Emily Hamilton Pate. In 1880 Lorenzo and Polly are living in Fresno Co., California. The children listed in the household are George W. age 19 born California, Iva age 7 born California and Lorenzo D. age 5 born California. Next door to Lorenzo is SAMUEL PATE age 37, son of ADAM & SALLY HUTTON PATE.
HENRY PATE born about 1789 in Virginia was living in Linn Co., Iowa in 1850. The others living in his household was Phillip age 25 born Indiana, Reuben age23 born Indiana, Edwin age 20 born Indiana, THOMAS RADIGAN age 27 born Ireland, RACHEL PATE RADIGAN age 22 born Indiana and Patrick Radigan age 1 born Iowa. By 1856 Henry was in Fairview Twp., Jones Co., Iowa.
