Thank you, Ross, for you suggestions. It's great to have found a fellow Ovenden researcher. My apologies for taking so long to respond -- we have a 5 month old and have been in the middle of a move (still not completely unpacked ...)
Re Alfred Ovenden:His Nebraska death record unfortunately only says "England" for place of birth, and "unknown" for his parents. The marriage record I have found is only a page in a ledger indicating the name of the groom and bride.Perhaps there is something more detailed somewhere, but this is what I was sent when I wrote the county in Nebraska (I live in California, so don't have easy access to Nebraska records). So I think your suggestion that I look at the U.K. census is a good one.Being tied down with the baby right now, this may take me awhile (I'm guessing that the local LDS Family History Library might have it, but time is scarce for getting in there now.) Eventually I may also turn to a researcher. You're right that this is an impossible name to search for, because of the Ovenden parish.
The more I think about it, perhaps the reason family lore has it that our Ovenden ancestor came from "Northern England" is that people assumed we must be from that Parish. It may well be that we're actually from Kent.I really have no idea.Until I get a bit further with this search, I think I'll wait on taking you up on your offer to share your Ovenden data from Kent -- unless it's really easy for you to send.I don't want to trouble you with sending something big that may not be directly related to my search.
Well, please let me know if you have any other ideas, and thanks so much for your help.
Best Wishes,
Margaret
