James Parkhill, Revolutionary War Private

Franklin County

Personally appeared before me the subscriber, and of the Associate Judge Court of Common Pleas for said County of Franklin, James Parkhill, now in his eighty third year of his age, who have duly sworn according to law doth make the following declaration on his oath in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions of the act passed the 7th of June, 1832.

That he joined the Company commanded by Captain William Houston, that he marched with him and thru Lancaster, Philadelphia, Trenton, and on to the Army commanded by General Washington.

That he left home about the beginning of July, 1776, that his tour of service was for six months, that General Ewing was his commanding officer of the camp which was called The Flying Camp. Frederick Watt was his Colonel.

That he was called to serve a Militia tour he thinks in the year 1779, That he could not serve at this time, but hired a substitute who was not called at the time and paid him, and makes no doubt but he done his duty. The call was for two months.

And futher that he was born in Ireland, that he came to America in the year 1772 and in 1774 came to the neighborhood where he now lives, which is near Laundon, in Peters Township, Franklin County, State of Pennsylvania, and he hereby relinquishes any prior claim to a pension or annuity except the present and that his name is not on any pension roll in this or any other state.

Question:       In what year were you born?

Answer:       I have not a record of my age, but think I am in my eighty third year.

Question:       Where were you living when called into service?
              Where have you lived since the Revolutionary War?
              Where do you now live?

Answer:       I have lived in the neighborhood where I now live since the year 1774.

Question:       How were you called into service?
              Were you drafted, did you volunteer, or were you a substitute?

Answer:       I was a volunteer.

Question:       State the names of some of the regular officers who were with the troops when you served., such Contentinal and Militia Regiments as you remember, and the General Commanders of your service.

Answer:       General Ewing was Commander of The Flying Camp, Colonel Frederick Watt was our Colonel, and with the Army under the command of General Washington.

Question:       State the names of persons to whom you are known in your neighborhood who can testify as to your character and belief of your service in the Revolution.

Answer:       Captain William McDowell and James Erwin.

Sworn to the 16th of February, 1833 before Mathew Patton.

Before me, the subscriber, one of the Associate Judges of the County of Franklin, personally came Captain William McDowell, and on oath saith - - That he joined for six months, marched the first of June, 177, our Captain was William Houston, and James Parkhill joined the Company at the same time and served the six months in The Flying Camp. The Regiment was commanded by Frederick Watt, General Ewing was the General, James Parkhill returned home at the end of six months.

Before me the subscriber, one of the Associate Judges of The Court of Common Pleas for Franklin County, State of Pennsylvania, appeared James Iwrin, of said County, now in the seventy fifth year of his age, and being sworn according to law, and on his oath saith - That he has known James Parkhill for more than fifty years. When captain William Houston’d Company started, he joined the army and that he believes that James Parkhill was one of the said Company, and makes no doubt that his statement made in the foregoing is correct amd may be believed.

I certify that I was an Ensign in Colonel Watt’s Regiment of what was called The Flying Camp, that Captain Houston belonged to said Regiment in the Summer and Campaign of 1776, that not being very intimate in Captain Houston’s Company, could not swear that Mr. Parkhill belonged to it, but having a strong impregnation that he did. He lived, I know, in the same neighborhood with Captain Houston, and I have little doubt but what he has said is strictly true.
