I have just found that the Parkes family that I am researching came from Staffordshire. Unfortunately, I have found many potential marriages in the 1820-1827 time frame between a Joseph Parkes and a Mary--In Brierley Hill, Halesowen (Worcester), Wolverhampton, Rowley Regis, and Dudley (Worcester). The first child that I know of is Josiah, born about 1828, and I find a Josiah baptized on 27 Jan 1828 in Cradley, Worcester. I think it is possible that Henrietta, baptized 10 Dec 1826 in Brierley Hill, is also a child of Joseph and Mary. The family immigrated to the U.S. about 1832 and settled first in Troy, NY. They later moved to Wheeling, WV (now--it was Virginia in 1850 when they were there). The family also lived in Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Joseph and his father were both iron workers--in the 1850 U.S. census Joseph's occupation was described as "Forger"--and three of Joseph's sons followed him into the iron trade. There are biographies of those three sons--Josiah, John C., and William B.--in the 1881 "History of Milwaukee" biographies, and I am working on getting copies. Please contact me if you have anything to add to my information about this family or if you think I might be able to help with yours. Notify Administrator about this message?
