Source: The Evening News Saulte Ste. Marie & Ont. Tuesday Afternoon Feb. 27, 1906 and Saturday March 10, 1906 MRS. BOLAN IS DEAD Was one of the Mackinac County's Pioneers. She saw the first steamboat on the Great Lakes when it appeared in 1818. St. Ignace, Mich., Feb. 27. In the death of Mrs. John Bolan of Gros Cap-an old Indian Village five miles from this city-Mackinac County has lost one of it's most historic characters. She has been an interesting personage here as long as the oldest inhabitant can remember. She was a pious Roman Catholic, her ancestors having been converted to that faith centuries ago by the great missionary, Pere Marquette. She had a remarkable memory for names, dates and events. The late Justice Day of the United States Supreme Court, whose summer house was but a few miles distant, was a great friend of this venerable woman, and spent many a pleasant hour listening to her lore. Stewart Edward White, one of Michigan's most popular authors, who has been for many years a member of the summer colony here, spent many hours at the home of Mrs. Bolan. She was a veritable living Indian epic-a great storehouse of Indian legends, traditions and customs. It was from her that White received much of his knowledge of Indian life used in his "Conjurer's House." Many of his "Blazed Trail" stories of this north country had their inspiration from the stories of this same woman. When in 1812 President Madison declared war against Great Britain, Mrs. Bolan lived in the Indian village of Mackinac Island. The Indians for the most part were sworn allies of the British at this period. She had vivid recollections of the attack on Fort Mackinac by the combined forces of the British and Indians and the surrender of the fort by the American troops. She herself favored the American cause. she described in a most amusing manner the appearance of Walk-in-the-Water in 1818, the first steamboat on the Great Lakes. The Indians at first thought it was some machination of the evil one, as they were unable to understand how it could plow through the water unaided by oars or sails. March 10, 1906 WAS NOT AN INDIAN Mrs. Bolan of Gros Cap was a Pure Blooded French Woman Some days ago an item of news appeared in these columns under a St. Ignace date line, relative to the death of Mrs. John Bolan of Gros Cap, in which the statement was made that Mrs. Bolan was an Indian. As a result of this statement the Evening News is requested to make a correction to the effect that Mrs. Bolan was pure French and had no Indian Blood in her veins. The death of an aged Indian squaw near St. Ignace about the same time seems to have been the cause of the blunder. Mrs. Christine Frichette of 818 Lizzie Street of this city, who is a grand daughter of Mrs. Bolan, is authority for this correction.
