Yes, it does get confusing. Do you know if any of your Pannells connect to the Pannells in Eastern Tennessee?

I found 1812 military records on a John Pannell, which I believe to be my John. He enlisted in Kingston County, TN. was in William D. Neilson's company that was under Col. John Brown. I believe this is my John because his brother-in-law and another family member were in the same company, he married his first wife in Kingston County as well. But I have not been able to connect him to any parents.
