Hi Tammy,
I wish I could be definite about your John Pannel. I am not sure what time period you were referring to, so I'll tell you what I know, also what I believe, but this may not be the John you are looking for.

In 1830 Haywood Co. NC census you find Daniel Pannell. I am fairly sure he was the son of Anderson Pannell of Fairfield Co., SC. He seemed to be somewhat of a wanderer in Georgia in 1820 for the Cherokee Land Lottery. In 1840 he was back in Fairfield Co. SC with his family, I am not looking at the record at the moment so don't remember how many children.

In 1850 Haywood Co. was Mary Pannell and family. Other records show her to be the daughter of William and Rachael Gunter who lived nearby. We know from another source that Daniel had died. She had at least 3 sons, William and Jackson I have no record of and Marion Jasper Pannell who married Matilda Ensley.

Marion and Matilda had 15 children, #7 was John, born 3 Jan 1878 Sylva, Jackson Co. He married 5 times. With Alma Clayton he had Fred, Roscoe and Garney. With Rebecca Monteith he had Vernon, Regina, Ruth and Craig Dennis.

He also married Callie Tallent, Mattie Crawford and May Bell Ensley. I have no record of children.

From the information I have, some of Marion and Sarah Pannell's children lived and died in Jackson Co. near Sylva. William Robert died in Longview, Washington. Samuel Thaddeus whose descendant gave me most of this information moved to Lehi, Utah.

Let me repeat, I have not seen any official document that proves Daniel Pannell to be the man who married Mary Gunter, but his being at the same place in 1830 indicates that it may be true. Also, Mary's daughter Elmira stated on one of the censuses that she was born in South Carolina and her age was at about the time Daniel had taken his family to live there. All circumstantial as is so much genealogy.

I hope I have not disappointed you

p.s. in 1920 Jackson Co. NC was a Thomas K. Pannell 40 born NC. This may be the Thomas Kimbro Pannel mentioned in one of the postings on Pannells in Idaho. His wife was Hanah E. 35 born Utah parents born Norway, children George 12, Mary 10, Herman 7, Elnora 4 2/12 all children born Idaho. They were listed at Scott's Creek Township
