Hi Susan,
No relation that I know of to your Panak line. Velke Uherce is 75 miles SW of Trstena, Orava County, Slovakia where my Panek ancestors lived as far back as the 1700s.
Velke Uherce is 70 miles ENE of Bratislava in Slovakia (Slovak Republic). What was once Czechoslavakia is now the Czech Republic in the west and the Slovak Republic in the east.
Regarding the surname spelling and changes to PANAK/PANEK several variations appear in the microfilmed church records of my ancestors in Trstena. I've seen it spelled PANEK, PANIK, PANAK, PANYAK, PANYIK, PANNICK, PANNEK. Take your pick. Most times it was spelled PANEK in the church records and that's the way it appears on my grandfather's baptism certificate.
