Sidney Journal, Fri. 10 Oct 1902.
Charles Bartholomew, better known as "Elephant" fell head first a distance of forty-seven feet, and was instantly killed. He was assisting John Orr in repairing the chimmneys of the Amos building Thurs afternoon. He was thirty-seven years old and had been making his home with his aunt Elizabeth Pancake. For several years he had been in charge of the elephants in the traveling menageries, whereby he came by the name of "Elephant."
(Only connection I can find with Pancake surname is thru Samuel Williams marriage to Sarah Pancake. Samuel's first wife was Elizabeth Dowden.)
