Greatgrandfather James Wilson/Winston/Winston - Canal

I am seeking info on both of my grandmother's parents. Her birth certificate (11/1914) cites her father as James Winson, though we now believe it may be Wilson or Winston. My grandmother says he was an American from Texas in Panama working on the railroads, never married her mother. I looked on the Roosevelt Medal cite and found a "James Wilson #5206" which could be him. Years ago, and uncle in Panama said he had found some record identifying a person with a similar name around the right time as an "engineer" for the RRs. Anyone have ideas on how to find more info about him? Thanks very much!
Mayra
