John Furey, Canal Zone worker
Posted by: George Furey (ID *****7888) Date: April 28, 2004 at 11:30:33

Can anyone fill me in on personal information about my uncle, John Furey? I never met him but I was on a Panama Canal cruise a few weeks ago and began to wonder about him. He left home in the early part of the twentieth century and went to work as a civilian employee of the Panama Canal Zone Authority. I was told that he worked in the boiler maker division and probably retired in the 1950's. I remember, as a child, we received Christmas cards from Balboa. My parents visited him in the early 1970's and, at that time, he lived in Gamboa in a section called the Ridge. I was also told that he was one of a very few retirees who was allowed to continue to live in the Canal Zone after retirement. He lived to be one hundred and died in Panama in 1994.

He married late in life but never had children. I was told that his wife was a nurse and probably also worked in the Canal Zone. He probably lived another thirty years after his wife passed away. The little bit of information I have was supplied by a nice man who currently lives in Texas. I thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
George Furey
