I've heard MAURO is mostly likely from MOORish raiders who settled in Italy, who some believe were a mixture of Arabs and Berbers (Islamic) who went into Spain during the 8th Century. On the other hand, I've heard of some Jewish people named de Mauro, same thing. I can only trace that side of my family back to 1847 so far as immigrants from Italy to New York. They were Italian Roman Catholics.
