zelpha ray:

Was John Painter (1736 to 1801) a Revolutionary War veteran? No. As a life-long Quaker, he abided by his faith’s commitment to pacifism.

You can now find in Google Books the text of “Hopewell Friends history, 1734-1934, Frederick County, Virginia,” an excellent resource for the Painter family descending from John Painter (about 1710 to 1771) and his wife Hannah Braddock (1713 to 1788).
