Thanks Robert for the reference to your web site. That is a pretty good web site.Actually, I have seen it before.I remember showing my nephew the understriker gun shown in the picture on your site and explaining to him that Jacob Painter made the gun and was our ancestor. My nephew was real interested.
What does it say on the card that is attached to the gun?
How many of Jacob's guns and rifles are in existence now?I was thinking that if someone took a metal detector to Jacob's home place, they might come up with some more of his guns.
I was curious about the English origin of the Painters shown on your site.My late mom, Artie Faye Painter O'Hair (daughter of Claude Thomas Painter, son of Lemuel Painter, son of Jacob Painter the gunsmith), was told by a Painter relative a long time ago that the Painters were Pennsylvania Dutch/German.Also, it seems like Maynard Painter (descendant of Samuel Painter, father of Jacob Painter) of Litchfield, Illinois had told or written me that the Painters were of Pennsylvania Dutch (German) ancestry.
I am happy with English or German ancestry for the Painters, I just want to know the truth.I am very interested in the English line you mention at your web site.Could you tell me what the evidence is for Samuel Painter (father of Jake the gunsmith) being son of John Painter born in 1754, the evidence for that John being son of John Painter born about 1720, and the connection between the elder John and Quaker English Painters?
Thanks a lot for putting up the interesting site showcasing one of Jake's guns, your genealogy research, and any help you can give me.I appreciate it. - Fred M. O'Hair
